LAHORE: Prominent personalities including politicians from various political factions and journalists condemned the shoe attack on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at Jamia Naeemia on Sunday.
A former seminary student threw a shoe at Nawaz Sharif during an event at Jamia Naeemia in Garhi Shahu area of Lahore.
According to details, Nawaz Sharif was invited to speak at an event at the seminary but as he reached the rostrum to address the audience, a person in the audience threw a shoe at him, hitting his chest, and started shouting slogans in favour of Tehreeke-e-Labbayk Ya Rasool Allah.
Speaking to a press conference earlier today, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan denounced the attack on the former prime minister calling it ‘not the right way to protest’.
PTI leader Jahangir Tareen took to Twitter to condemn the attack, saying that ‘why resort to such acts, when you have the option of sending them out through the power of vote? Do take your revenge but take it gracefully’.
Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal termed the attack on Nawaz as ‘deplorable’ adding that ‘I hope that it is not an orchestrated pattern. Those doing so only show their moral bankruptcy’.
In a message shared through Twitter, journalist Talat Hussain said that things are getting ‘dirtier and desperate’ by the day. “Now no one will be safe. This is the new ploy. Very very sad,” he said.
