ISLAMABAD: The eligibility of newly-elected Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani has been challenged in the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday.
A petition was filed in the top court on Thursday raising an objection that Sanjrani is too young for becoming acting president of the country.
As per the constitution, the age of the president of the country should be 45 whereas the newly-elected Senate chairman is only 40-year old, the petition stated.
It pleaded that the election for the Senate chairmanship must be held again as Sanjrani becoming acting president would lead the country to a constitutional crisis.
On March 12, Sanjrani, backed by the opposition, was elected Senate chairman securing 57 votes against ruling Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Raja Zafarul Haq, who managed to bag 46 votes.
