ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court will hear on Tuesday the petition filed by the former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar against the Avenfield verdict.
On July 6, an accountability court had sentenced Nawaz Sharif to a total of 11 years in prison besides a fine of £8 million in the corruption reference, while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to eight years with a £2 million fine. Nawaz’s son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar was given a one-year sentence without any fine.
Sharif family then challenged the conviction of Avenfield reference in IHC. The petition highlighted ‘legal flaws’ in the Avenfield judgement and it requested declare court’s verdict null and void.
The accountability trial against the Sharif family had started on September 14, 2017. The three references pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Limited, and Avenfield properties of London.
Nawaz Sharif and his sons, Hussain Nawaz and Hasan Nawaz, were accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.
Yesterday, SC had resumed the hearing of Al Azizia and Flagship references but it adjourned the session till the judgment of IHC today.
