ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) ordered the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) on Monday to halt its new appointments until SPSC chairman and members’ eligibility case is finalised.
A three-member bench of the apex court – headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali – comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard a suo moto case regarding the eligibility of the SPSC chairman and its members.
During the proceedings of the case, the provincial additional Advocate General (AG) appeared before the court and stated that if the commission is forbidden from making further recruitments, the system would collapse – as the process of doctors’ recruitment was in progress. On which Justice Khilji raised a question that how was it possible that the commission appointed a chairman who’s not eligible for the post?
The chief justice remarked that the court would not allow the commission to function until it is satisfied about the appointment of the chairman regarding his eligibility.
SPSC’s counsel – Farooq Naek – appeared before the court and apprised the bench that the current chairman was eligible for the post as he had served on different government positions for more than 20 years. The court issued directives to the commission to stop new recruitment till the disposal of the petition and adjourned the hearing till November 3.
